This weekend, my family and I went on a little getaway to King’s Beach in North Lake Tahoe. King’s Beach is one of our favorite places to visit. Weekend getaways and family vacations are the perfect time to disconnect from the day-to-day grind, reflect on recent accomplishments/success, and reconnect with loved ones. It is also the perfect time to reaffirm your commitment to yourself and your long-term health and fitness!
During our weekends away, I prioritize getting some type of workout in. Not every single day, not the exact workouts I would do at home, but something. It wouldn’t be the end of the world for my overall health and fitness if I didn’t make training a priority and just skipped it for the weekend. That said, one of the core principles of Victory Performance’s training methodology is #Relentless #Consistency. Consistency is a significant factor in achieving whatever goals you have. Whether those goals have to do with your health and fitness, finance, school, sports, etc., consistency wins out.
This is where the #Relentless part comes in. It’s easier to be consistent when you’re in familiar places and in your regular routine. Part of being consistent is developing a routine. But, when you’re out of your routine and have to work a little harder to find a place to train, plan a workout, and maybe even take an hour away from family, it can be hard to stay consistent. In times like this, you must lean into being #Relentless.
In his book “Relentless,” famous trainer Tim Grover, who has worked with athletes like Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan, defines being relentless like this:
To be the best, whether in sports or business or any other aspect of life, it’s never enough to just get to the top; you have to say there, and then you have to climb higher, because there’s always someone right behind you trying to catch up. Most people are willing to settle for “good enough”. But if you want to be unstoppable, those words mean nothing to you. Being the best means engineering your life so you never stop until you get what you want, and then you keep going until you get what’s next. And then you go for even more.
In the context of this blog post, you aren’t competing with someone else. You are competing with the inner voice telling you, “It won’t be the end of the world if I don’t train this weekend. I’ll get back on track on Monday.” And maybe you will. But if you ask me, that mindset is dangerous.
It is possible to take time away from the day-to-day grind while still prioritizing your long-term health and fitness and the goals you have set out for yourself. You don’t need to do the exact same workouts you would do at home. You don’t need to find a gym. You just need to do something!
So, my challenge to you is on your next weekend getaway or vacation, prioritize your fitness by planning when you will work out on your trip. If you’re someone who never works out on vacation, all it takes is a 20-minute workout to make progress! In 20 minutes, you’ll prove to yourself you can do it AND continue to move in the right direction towards your goals!
Be #Relentless. Be #Consistent.
See you all in the gym!
